Hike Summary: Hiking Ireland's Mt. Brandon

Mt Bandon Dingle Peninsula Ireland

Ireland, a land steeped in myth and legend, held a special allure for us.  During our two-week adventure through Ireland this past summer we wanted to make sure we took some time to enjoy the outdoors away from the crowds and traditional tourist sites.  We set our sights on hiking Mt. Brandon, not just for the physical challenge, but for the chance to walk a path trod by saints and pilgrims for centuries – the ancient Cosán na Naomh, or Saints Trail.

Our journey began under a clear blue sky, the July sun warming our faces as we took our first steps onto the trail. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and the faint sweetness of wildflowers clinging to the rocky slopes.  We decided to take the Saint’s trail which is marked by 15 white crosses on the way to the summit.   You’ll know you’re on the right path when you go by the large grotto off the parking lot.

The lower slopes were a tapestry of vibrant green and flowers.  The first portion of the trail goes over marshy fields so be sure to watch out if there has been a lot of rain.  As we ascended, we got onto more rugged terrain and the views began to unfold into breathtaking panorama of the Dingle Peninsula in a patchwork of emerald fields meeting the clear blue sea. The rugged coastline, carved by centuries of wind and waves, added a dramatic touch to the already stunning scenery. We weren’t alone on our pilgrimage. On our way up the mountain we ran into a flock of sheep grazed peacefully on a precipitous slope, their woolly coats blending seamlessly with the landscape.

Reaching the summit was a hard-won victory. While the wind was mild to none existent at the base of the mountain, it was whipping around us as we reached the peak.  The air was cold and biting and we huddled down behind some rock outcrops for shelter.  Although clouds had begun to gather, we were still rewarded with breathtaking views. We paused to catch our breath, have a quick snack and capture photos to preserve the capture the incredible beauty.

Hiking Mt. Brandon via the Saints Trail isn’t just about conquering a mountain; it’s about connecting with a place rich in history, legend, and breathtaking beauty. It’s a pilgrimage for the soul, a journey that stays with you long after your boots leave the trail.
